How many UK businesses use AI in 2026?

The Office for National Statistics reported that 30% of UK businesses used at least one AI technology in September 2026. Adoption rises with size: 29% of firms with fewer than 10 employees, 38% with 10 or more, and 51% with 250 or more. Text generation is the most common use among larger firms.

Among businesses with 10 or more employees, 21% used large language models for text generation. The ONS also asked AI-using firms which roles were most affected. Administrative and clerical roles came top, named by 38% of AI-using firms with 10 or more staff.

The headcount figures are smaller than the headlines suggest. Only 6% of AI-using firms with 10 or more staff reported reduced headcount, and under 1% reported an increase. The guide to whether AI will take your job explains what those figures mean in practice. A FlowGenix audit maps where admin hours actually go before any tool gets chosen.

Which AI tools do people in the UK prefer?

ChatGPT is the AI tool most UK AI users prefer, chosen by 30.0% in YouGov's first UK AI brand rankings. Its lead is shrinking. ChatGPT fell from 35.8% in March 2026 to 30.7% in July, while Google's Gemini recorded the strongest growth in preference over the same period.

YouGov based the rankings on daily BrandIndex surveys, with minimum bases above 6,740 UK AI users. The same research found two in five businesses say adopting AI is critical to their future growth. Preference measures which tool people like using most, not which tool their employer pays for.

Tool choice matters less than most owners expect. The business tiers of ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Claude all write a decent email. The difference comes from what the tool connects to. FlowGenix builds on the Anthropic API inside n8n workflows, so the AI step reads from and writes to the systems a business already runs. The comparison of ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Claude for UK businesses covers prices and data terms.

Key facts

  • 30.0% of UK AI users prefer ChatGPT, according to YouGov.
  • ChatGPT's UK preference share fell by 5 points between March and July 2026.
  • Gemini recorded the strongest growth in UK preference over the same period.

What do people in the UK use AI for?

People in the UK mostly use AI to write, learn and research. In Anthropic's Economic Index, content creation and copywriting makes up 21.5% of UK Claude conversations, education and learning 15.1%, and research 12.3%. Software development is 8.2% in the UK, against 11.5% globally.

The Economic Index measures observed Claude usage only, matched to job tasks, in a single snapshot from May 2026. The figures describe what AI is used for, not who the users are. A conversation about tasks commonly done by accountants is often started by someone who is not an accountant.

The UK profile leans towards advice and messages. Advice or recommendation makes up 13.6% of what UK conversations produce, against 10.7% globally. Emails and messages make up 5.8%, against 4.6%. UK users also work alongside the AI more often than they hand tasks off, at 55% against a 51% global share. FlowGenix uses the same split when scoping builds: drafting stays collaborative, while fixed admin steps run as n8n workflows.

  • The Economic Index covers observed Claude usage only, from a May 2026 snapshot.

Where is AI used less in UK work?

Tasks commonly done in office and administrative roles make up 7.3% of UK Claude usage, below the 7.9% global share. Tasks commonly done in computer and maths roles are also below the global share, at 20.2% against 23.8%. Education, healthcare and community roles sit above it.

The ONS and Anthropic figures measure different things, so neither proves the other. The ONS asks businesses where AI affects roles. The Economic Index records what people ask a chat assistant. Read side by side, admin tops the ONS impact list while admin tasks sit below the global share of chat usage.

One practical reading is that admin work suits workflows better than chat. A chat assistant helps someone draft an email. Rekeying an enquiry into a CRM or chasing an invoice runs better as an automation with no chat window at all. The guide to what a UK SME should automate first ranks those tasks, and workflow and CRM automation is the FlowGenix service that builds them.

The guide to AI for admin tasks shows which admin jobs suit a chat tool and which suit a workflow.

Key facts

  • Office and admin tasks make up 7.3% of UK Claude usage against 7.9% globally.
  • The ONS names administrative and clerical roles as the most affected by AI.
  • FlowGenix builds admin automation as n8n workflows rather than chat tools.

Is interest in AI for business still growing in the UK?

UK search interest in "ai for business" peaked in early May 2026, according to Google Trends. Interest in the Business & Industrial category was too low to register before spring 2023, climbed through 2024 and 2025, and stepped up from late 2025. By early October 2026 weekly interest had fallen to around a quarter of the May peak.

Google Trends shows relative interest, not search volume. A score of 100 marks the busiest week in the chosen period, and every other week is scaled against it. The most recent week is often incomplete, so the latest point can understate interest. The jagged weekly line also suggests modest absolute volume for this exact phrase.

The fall in a generic phrase does not mean interest in AI is falling. Searches may be moving to tool names and specific tasks, such as "ChatGPT for invoices" or "AI receptionist". FlowGenix tracks those specific searches when planning content, because they show what owners actually want to do.

Key facts

  • Google Trends shows UK interest in "ai for business" peaked in early May 2026.
  • Weekly interest in early October 2026 was around a quarter of that peak.
  • Google Trends reports relative interest on a 0 to 100 scale, not search volume.

What should a UK small business do with these figures?

Use the figures to check your own position, not to copy other firms. If your team already uses AI mainly for writing, the next gains usually sit in admin and operations. Start with a written AI policy, then map repeating admin tasks, then automate the highest-volume task with clear rules.

The guide for small businesses getting started with AI covers the first steps. A policy comes first because usage is already happening. Staff using free accounts with customer data create risk before any automation does. The free UK AI policy template covers approved tools, banned data and human review in one page.

Mapping comes next. List every repeating admin task, record how often it runs, and multiply by the minutes it takes. The task with the most hours and the clearest rules is the first candidate. A FlowGenix audit only quotes for high-volume, rule-based work.

Steps for a UK small business:

  1. Write a one-page AI policy and name an owner.
  2. List the repeating admin tasks in each department.
  3. Rank each task by hours per month and rule clarity.
  4. Automate the top task and measure the result for 30 days.
  5. Review the next task only after the first one holds up.

Key facts

  • A written AI policy should come before any automation project.
  • Hours per month multiplied by rule clarity ranks admin tasks for automation.
  • FlowGenix audits only quote for high-volume, rule-based work.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of UK businesses use AI?

The ONS reported that 30% of UK businesses used at least one AI technology in September 2026. Adoption rises with business size, from 29% of firms with fewer than 10 employees to 51% of firms with 250 or more. Text generation using large language models was the most common use among firms with 10 or more staff.

Which AI tool is most popular in the UK?

ChatGPT is the AI tool most UK AI users prefer, at 30.0% in YouGov's UK AI brand rankings for 2026. Its share fell from 35.8% in March to 30.7% in July 2026. Google's Gemini recorded the strongest growth in preference over the same period, so the gap is narrowing.

Does the UK use AI more than other countries?

On Claude usage, yes. Anthropic's Economic Index gives the UK a usage index of 3.35 in its May 2026 snapshot, ranking 16th of 121 countries. An index of 1.0 means usage exactly in line with working-age population, so the UK uses Claude 3.35 times more than its population alone would predict.

Is AI replacing jobs in UK businesses?

The ONS figures show limited headcount change so far. Of UK firms with 10 or more staff using AI, 6% reported reduced headcount in the October 2026 release, and under 1% reported an increase. Administrative and clerical roles were the most affected, which points to tasks changing more than whole jobs disappearing.

What is the Anthropic Economic Index?

The Anthropic Economic Index is a published dataset showing how people use Claude, matched to job tasks and countries. Figures come from anonymised, aggregated conversations and cannot be tied to individuals. The data describes observed AI usage, not employment, so it cannot show job losses or predict which roles will be automated.
